Young & Restless Backfire: Nick Just Reignited a Flame Guaranteed to End With a Massive Explosion

Nick’s heart was in the right place on when he made his latest move on Young & Restless, however, he’s inadvertently laid the groundwork for what will be the most epic of meltdowns. One that could affect half of Genoa City!
With growing concern for Sharon’s mental stability, Nick told Faith and Mariah that he would spend some more time with his ex one-on-one so as to get a read on how she was doing. Frankly, though it was well-meaning, it felt like a bad idea from the moment he uttered the words.
Despite Sharon’s insistence that she is just fine, Faith’s tale about her going out for a mysterious drive late at night set her loved ones on edge. The girls agreed that Nick knew her better than anyone and would be able to suss out whether or not she was just getting better at hiding her volatile behavior. Grabbing the horse by the proverbial reins, Nick wasted no time in asking his ex-wife out to dinner. When she accepted, he cheerfully declared, “It’s a date!” This, of course, left intuitive viewers everywhere shaking their heads and cringing: “No, Nick. Just… no.”
Sure enough, Sharon took the word “date” to heart, believing her recent romantic fantasies about her ex-hubby were coming true. Sharon got dressed to the nines, even pulling out and putting on the earrings Nick had given her back in the day, and explaining to Faith how meaningful the jewelry was to her. Sharon’s excitement was palpable.
When the big moment came, and Nick arrived at the door, he clearly had not prepared for the dinner with as much anticipation as Sharon. He was dressed casually, in the same shirt he was wearing earlier when he’d asked her to grab a bite, in fact. Undeterred, Sharon remained thrilled to be going out with him at all as they headed to the Genoa City Athletic Club.
At dinner, Nick wasn’t completely oblivious to Sharon’s unbridled enthusiasm, it was hard to miss the stark contrast to his own low-key approach to the outing. He even managed to notice the special earrings, but had to ask for confirmation that he was the one who had gifted them to her. Back at Sharon’s place, Nick fell well short of the mark when it came to saying goodnight. As Cameron so kindly pointed out he saw her off with a hug, and, “The bum didn’t even walk you to the door.”
This left Sharon fantasizing about a goodbye kiss that never came, followed by a sexy imaginary make-out sesh on the sofa that was rudely interrupted by her late stalker. So, what’s the big deal? Well, we’ll tell ya’.
Nick asking Sharon to dinner and referring to it as a date was, quite simply put, playing with fire. Of course, he has no idea that she’s been daydreaming about them getting back together, but Nick is well-aware that he’s dealing with a woman who has been mentally ill. She’s not been seeing things as they are, and she’s been over-reacting to her perception of situations (if he only knew to what extent!). This is a situation that should have been handled with kid gloves.
Mark our words, this will backfire on Nick spectacularly. After Daniel is arrested, and Phyllis loses her mind, Nick will be running to Red’s rescue, leaving the fair Sharon fuming. Once Sharon realizes (and she will because… soaps) that Nick only asked her to dinner to gauge her mental state and not because he was interesting in rekindling their relationship, she’s going to go the rest of the way off the rails. Considering the damage she’s already done, this is a prospect that’s pretty damn scary.
Not only has Nick inadvertently created a situation that could set off Sharon all over again, but he could be putting a deadly target on his other ex-wife’s back as the Phyllis vs. Sharon feud erupts anew!
